ICLA Board Elections Update

We look forward to greeting many of you in Buenos Aires in a few days. Whether or not you will be able to attend, please consider getting involved in the leadership of the association and encouraging others to do so. Due to an insufficient response to our earlier call for candidacies, we are extending the call until the end of the day on Monday, July 14. Voting will now be open from July 15-16 (Tuesday and Wednesday), and results will be announced in the General Assembly on July 17 (Thursday). The original call with instructions and [updated dates] is provided below:

There are six position openings for the next cycle (2025-2027), five regular positions with two-year terms and one non-voting member with an unspecified term. All positions are renewable if re-elected:

  • President (one position, two-year term)
  • Regular Board Members (three positions, two-year terms)
  • Young Scholar Representative (one position, two year term, PhD or Postdoc)
  • Web Administrator (one position, non-voting, open term appointment)

Three-phase election process

The election of ICLA officers is now carried out fully online with the election process proceeding in three phases:

1. Email collection of candidate applications and profile compilation (June 18 – July [14]).

2. Online declaration of candidates and collection of votes (July [15-16]).

3. Public announcement of results and introduction of new board (July 17).

The first two phases are for current members of the association. If you wish to participate and are not currently a member of the association, please renew your membership online (cognitivelinguistics.org) in order to vote or prior to applying for candidature. The newly elected board will be announced during the ICLC17 General Assembly in Buenos Aires, scheduled for Thursday, July 17; but all members will be able to vote, regardless of conference attendance.

Collection of Candidate Applications

June 18 – July [14]. We encourage all members and affiliates of the ICLA to consider taking part in the leadership of the association by running for one of the six vacant positions on the governing board of the association listed above. Working together, we seek to develop broad, equitable representation guided by the ICLA statement of diversity and inclusion: https://www.cognitivelinguistics.org/about/diversi...

To apply for candidacy, please email the following information to both the ICLA Acting Secretary and the ICLA Web Administrator <intcogling@gmail.com, hartmast@hhu.de>:

  1. Confirmation of membership (renewal date)
  2. Title of position you are applying for (see above).
  3. Institutional affiliation and current position
  4. Statement of candidacy (relevant motivations and qualifications, 200-300 words)
  5. Link to your online web page or profile page (optional but recommended)
  6. Recent photo (optional but recommended)

Voting Procedure

July [15]–16. Elections will proceed for two days] via member login on the ICLA-website. In order to vote, please log in as a member. Then click the Elections link: https://cognitivelinguistics.org/en/election

During election week, there will also be a special banner on the home page with a "VOTE" button linked to the Elections page. On the voting page, you will find a set of instructions along with an overview of open positions and the candidates for each of these positions. Click a candidate's name for more information.

Each position counts as a separate election. Each member can vote only once, and all votes are anonymous. To avoid accidental blank votes, you must give each candidate in a given election a ranking. If you want your vote to count, no voting box should be left empty. Simply list your first choice ranking with a 1, your second choice ranking with a 2, and so on. If you wish to abstain from voting, list 0 for the ranking. If a position features only a single candidate, enter a 1 or a 0 to either vote or abstain.

Results

The anonymous results of the election will be exported from the website into spreadsheet format) for calculation in communication with the current ICLA board leadership. Results will then be announced at the ICLC17 General Assembly on Thursday, July 17, and will subsequently be made public on the ICLA website following the conference.
